The Ethics of Authorship
Jun Bang-Ook

Abstract
Scientific publication which has a function to evaluate scientists and exchange professional information in scientific community requires to follow the law of integrity. Recently it is found that the numbers of authors per article have increased in the biomedical research articles, which indicates the possibility of improper authorship given to unqualified author(s). Critical issues in authorship address questions like "who should be the first author?", "who should be included in the byline?" and "how authors should be listed in order?". The international guidelines, namely the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals, recommend to include substantial contributor(s) only as author(s) in order to prevent fraudulent authorship such as gift authorship, honorary authorship, disguised authorship, swapping authorship, ghost authorship, and denial of authorship. Because there is a discrepancy between ideal guidelines and reality, it is recommended for scientists to communicate with appropriate professionals including the editors whenever the authorship problem is concerned.
